He's got my vote!
Here's my state governor enjoying my favorite sandwich to promote the sandwich's temporary return in Fall '99.

Illinois Gov. George Ryan takes a bite out of a McRib sandwich  following a press conference at McDonald's in 1999.
McDonald's restaurants across the state pledged to purchase an additional 400,000 pounds of pork products in 1999.

Here's an article discussing the McRib's triumphant return in Indiana:

McRib return to aid farmers

AP

INDIANAPOLIS -- In a move to help Indiana's beleaguered hog farmers, McDonald's Corp. will reintroduce its McRib sandwich for a seven-week run in Indiana using only Hoosier-grown pork in the sandwiches.
McDonald's officials are expected to announce the initiative today during a news conference with Lt. Gov. Joe Kernan. The sandwiches will be available at a reduced price starting Friday at 300 McDonald's restaurants in Indiana.
"Because pork prices are low at this time of crisis, we are passing on the savings to our customers," said David Sleppy, past president of the Central Indiana McDonald's Restaurants owner/operators cooperative.
Sleppy said the company anticipates using up to half a million pounds of pork during the promotion. All of the pork used in the McRib sandwiches will be purchased from Hoosier hog producers, he said.
The nation's hog farmers have been stung by record low prices that resulted from global hog overproduction and reduced demand in Asia because of to economic troubles. Hogs prices have been rebounding, but still remain low.
Gerry Mennin, an Indiana pork producer who is president-elect of the Indiana Pork Producers Association, hailed McDonald's McRib promotion.
"We welcome this initiative ... It raises the awareness of our plight, and also encourages the public to enjoy more pork," Mennin said.
Kernan, who is Indiana's commissioner of agriculture, chairs a task force that is looking into the plight of the state's pork producers.
"We salute this McDonald's effort. They have worked hard to get this promotion out of the gate as fast as possible," Kernan said.

McRib Availability

No news of any major return of the McRib anytime soon.  From what I've been told by McDonald's, the McRib is an "optional" menu item and your local McDonald's can have it on their menu anytime they want.  Get on the phone.  Now.

My most recent enjoyment of the McRib in Chicagoland was in August & September of 1999.  At least in the U.S.A., it just seems to pop up whenever local pork producers and McDonald's make some kind of a deal.  People signing the guestbook usually tell a similar tale.  If it comes back to your area, you can expect it to stay about 4-8 weeks.  Enjoy it while it lasts!

I e-mailed the national pork people in Jan. '99 from their site at http://www.nppc.org, and got this response:
"The McRib is out right now!  Not sure how long it will be around - the McRib
is controlled by McDonald's and they just tell us when it will be around."
So after wetting my pants and calling several local McDonald's, I found out the McRib was NOT out (here at least- Chicagoland, IL), so I don't know what the woman who wrote to me was referring to.  -RibMaster

Want to contact McDonald's to profess your love for the McRib?  Good Luck.
Their web site offers nothing in the way of consumer input.  The phone number to their Oak Brook, IL headquarters is 630-623-3000.

Want to satisfy those McRib cravings when our favorite sandwich is not in season?
Your local Jewel Food store has all you need:
Look in the frozen section and you'll find a "President's Choice" item called "Ribbits".  The photos on the cover show a slab of meat that bears a striking resemblance to the McRib. After the $10 bulk pack investment, all you need to do is head over to the bakery area to find the right bun, buy some dill pickle slices, onions, and some BBQ sauce (the RibMaster prefers "Sweet Baby Ray's Hot & Spicy") and you're ready to make you own McRibs right at Home!!!!!

Schwan's Foods also has a product called BBQ Rib Entree that is similar to the world's best sandwich.  I've tried them.  They're a little more appetizing that this photo suggests.
